WHAT CAUSES SNORING?
Snoring is caused when the soft tissues of the throat relax during sleep and block the passage of air. If the episode lasts longer than 10 seconds and there are more than 5 episodes per hour of sleep it is called apnea (without breath). When a person stops breathing, oxygen levels decrease, heart rate changes and blood pressure rises. As dramatic changes take place the brain will stimulate the person to breath and the person is aroused from sleep with a large gasp or snort as they start to wake up. Deep sleep is never attained as the cycle of apnea and arousal continues.
